Compounded Suffering: An Investigative Report on The Humanitarian Crisis and Failure of Justice in Taiz

The “Compounded Suffering” report details a grave humanitarian crisis in Taiz Governorate, Yemen, exposing widespread violations against women and children from January 2023 to June 2024. The study, conducted by the Center for Strategic Studies to Support Women and Children, reveals a pattern of violence primarily perpetrated by the Houthi group, but also implicates the internationally recognized Yemeni government through abuses of power and obstruction of justice. The report documents a high number of casualties resulting from sniper attacks, landmine explosions, indiscriminate bombings, and drone strikes. These incidents are frequently followed by cover-ups and a lack of accountability within the justice system. The report highlights the disproportionate impact of these violations on women and children, emphasizing the urgent need for international intervention to address this ongoing crisis. Specific instances include the targeting of children playing near their homes and women collecting water, illustrating the indiscriminate nature of the violence. The systematic lack of accountability and justice underscores the need for immediate international pressure to end the conflict, address these violations, and provide much-needed support and redress to victims. The report concludes that the failure to hold perpetrators accountable perpetuates a climate of impunity, leaving vulnerable populations exposed to ongoing violence and suffering.
