Joint Statement: Over 40 Organizations Condemn Press Freedom Violations in Yemen

On World Press Freedom Day, Justice4Yemen Pact and other rights groups call for urgent action to protect journalists in Yemen.

3 May 2025 – On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, over 40 Yemeni, regional, and international human rights organizations—including the Justice4Yemen Pact coalition—express grave concern over the ongoing and intensifying crackdown on press freedom in Yemen.

Journalists face arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, and targeted killings, with widespread impunity. Authorities continue to misuse the judiciary to silence dissent, while women journalists face heightened threats, including online harassment and smear campaigns.

The undersigned organizations call on all Yemeni authorities to immediately release arbitrarily detained journalists, ensure fair trials before competent courts, end judicial harassment, and investigate all violations committed against media workers.

Freedom of the press is essential to justice and accountability in Yemen. Journalism is not a crime.
