Joint Statement on International Day to Protect Education from Attack: Save Education in Yemen

On September 9, the International Day to Protect Education from Attack underscores the urgent need to safeguard Yemen’s educational system. The ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized government and the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group has severely impacted Yemen’s schools, with over 2,900 institutions damaged or destroyed and many repurposed for military use. This crisis has directly affected over 20,000 children, impeding their access to education. UNESCO and UNICEF are called upon to accelerate efforts to protect and restore Yemen’s educational infrastructure. It is crucial to end ongoing attacks and establish robust accountability mechanisms. Immediate recommendations include halting attacks on educational facilities, supporting educational reforms, and addressing overdue teacher salaries. Initiatives from UNESCO and UNICEF to restore education and support affected communities are welcomed, but their success depends on the cooperation of all conflict parties. Coordinated and immediate action is essential to secure Yemen’s educational future.
