Judicial Manipulation and Political Executions: A Study on the Death Penalty in Yemen

The study titled “Execution in Yemen” by J4YP coalition member, SAM Rights & Liberties, investigates the use of the death penalty by conflict parties in Yemen, revealing its manipulation as a tool to eliminate political dissent and compromise judicial independence. The findings indicate that the de facto authorities, specifically the Houthis, have extensively employed the death penalty for political purposes, targeting opponents and violating fair trial standards. This practice starkly contrasts with the pre-2015 period, when the legitimate authority exercised more restraint. The study emphasizes the humanitarian impact of such practices, which instill fear and suppress dissent, highlighting broader human rights violations, including extrajudicial executions. Aligning with global trends advocating for the reduction or abolition of the death penalty, the study calls for urgent reforms. It recommends international and domestic efforts to restore judicial independence, protect human rights, and ultimately abolish the political use of the death penalty to ensure justice and dignity for all Yemenis.
