Advancing Transitional Justice through Inclusive Awareness and Advocacy in Yemen

DT Institute, in collaboration with members of the Justice4Yemen Pact (J4YP), is advancing transitional justice in Yemen through a coordinated awareness and advocacy campaign aimed at promoting inclusion, accountability, and reconciliation. This initiative is grounded in the findings of the Path Toward Peace study, conducted under the SPARK project, which revealed that nearly half of the surveyed participants lacked basic knowledge of transitional justice.

In response, DTI and its partners have designed a comprehensive, multi-platform campaign that will be implemented both online and in person across Taiz and Marib. The campaign targets a wide range of stakeholders—including victims, youth, political actors, religious leaders, law and journalism students, and key institutional figures such as the Community Reconciliation Committee (CRC) and the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen (OSESGY)—with the goal of cultivating an inclusive, locally owned vision for transitional justice.

As part of this initiative, SAM is implementing three specialized awareness campaigns, the first of which focuses on the role of religious leaders in shaping public understanding of transitional justice in Taiz, particularly among rural and undereducated communities. Working in consultation with the Endowment Office, SAM has selected a group of moderate, community-trusted preachers who are aligned with transitional justice values.

AMA is launching the Transitional Justice Ambassadors Forum, which will serve as the central platform for its three awareness campaigns. Set to officially launch in early August with AMA’s support, the forum will be established by victims, civil society actors, and youth leaders. It will function as a participatory and inclusive space for strengthening transitional justice awareness, particularly among victims and youth from conflict-affected communities. Through a series of in-person and online activities in Taiz and Marib, the forum will not only promote broader understanding of TJ but will also offer targeted psychosocial and legal support to victims, addressing their immediate needs while helping restore trust and agency.

In parallel, J4YP partners are developing raising awareness campaigns that incorporate traditional Yemeni reconciliation customs alongside international TJ experiences. Using creative tools—such as culturally resonant music and storytelling—these campaigns aim to elevate the voices of victims, advocate for reparations, and hold actors accountable. Collectively, these efforts represent a deepening commitment to building a transitional justice process in Yemen that is both transformative and rooted in the lived realities of its people.
