The storming of the Yemeni women’s Union Headquarters in Aden

On May 13 and 26, 2024, the Yemeni Women’s Union (YWU) headquarters in Aden was subjected to forceful intrusions by members of the General Union of Southern Women, with support from the Southern Transitional Council (STC). These assaults, carried out in broad daylight, severely disrupted the YWU’s operations, including its shelter for vulnerable women. Despite the YWU’s condemnation and urgent appeals for intervention, the headquarters was overtaken and vandalized, resulting in substantial property damage and the confiscation of documents. The General Union of Southern Women defended these actions by citing grievances against the YWU. A subsequent investigation report by the Yemeni Archive highlighted the extensive damage and the imposition of STC-affiliated guards following the second intrusion. Although the YWU partially regained control of the building, the continued presence and influence of STC-affiliated forces underscore the ongoing conflicts and power struggles in Aden.
