Witness Memory Report Highlights Severe Human Rights Violations and Calls for Immediate Reforms in Yemen’s Detention Facilities

The Witness Memory Report by Justice for Yemen coalition member, the Abductees’ Mothers Association documents severe human rights violations in Yemen’s detention facilities, including arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, torture, and medical neglect, resulting in numerous deaths. The report highlights 20 deaths, with 8 due to torture and 11 due to medical neglect, predominantly in Houthi prisons, and widespread pulmonary tuberculosis in the Political Security Detention Center in Ma’rib. The report also exposes severe torture in Al-Saleh Detention Center in Taiz and systemic issues like obstruction of justice and lack of accountability. Recommendations include ending arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, and torture; ensuring medical care for detainees; allowing human rights investigations; and conducting independent inquiries into torture and neglect allegations. It calls for remedies for victims, including compensation and rehabilitation, and urges the international community to pressure warring parties for detainee releases and prison monitoring. Survivors, fellow detainees, and families are encouraged to document violations and pursue justice, while journalists are advised to verify information and adhere to professional standards when reporting on these issues.
