Political Executions in Yemen statement : Call for Legal Reforms

A Justice4Yemen pact coalition of human rights organizations has issued a joint statement urging the Yemeni government to abolish laws allowing political executions. The statement highlights the misuse of the judiciary by the Ansar Allah movement (Houthis) to settle political scores and execute opponents.

A study by SAM revealed the judiciary’s lack of independence and the vague, repressive nature of current laws. With over 550 death sentences reported, primarily against political opponents, there’s an urgent need for legal reform.

The statement calls for suspending current provisions and forming an independent legal committee to draft new legislation in line with human rights standards. It also demands the permanent abolition of the death penalty in political cases, amending related articles in the Penal and Military Penal Codes.

The coalition emphasizes the necessity of judicial independence to prevent political manipulation and ensure justice for all citizens, urging immediate reforms to protect human rights in Yemen.
