Landmines in Yemen: A Persistent Threat to Children’s Lives

Produced by the Justice4Yemen Coalition and published by Daraj Media.

The Justice4Yemen Pact Coalition highlights the harrowing impact of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) on children in Yemen, revealing a crisis that continues to devastate families and communities. Amid the ongoing conflict, these hidden dangers disproportionately affect the most vulnerable, with children comprising over half of all landmine victims in the country. In January 2024 alone, 17 civilians, including children, were killed or injured by landmines, with the threat only expected to rise. Heartbreaking cases like that of 17-year-old Muhanad Mubarak Al-Aqili, who succumbed to injuries from a landmine explosion, and 7-year-old Saif Basam Al-Jalla, who endured multiple surgeries due to severe injuries, underscore the urgent need for action. The coalition calls for immediate international support to address this crisis, emphasizing the necessity of mine clearance, victim rehabilitation, and the integration of landmine removal into peace processes.
