Human Rights Violations in Aden: A Bleak Reality for Activists and Journalists

A recent report by the Justice4Yemen Pact Coalition, published by Daraj media, sheds light on the deteriorating human rights situation in Aden, Yemen. Activists, journalists, and civil society organizations face systematic violations under the Southern Transitional Council (STC), which acts as the de facto authority in the city. These abuses include arbitrary detentions, torture, and severe restrictions on freedom of expression and association.

Journalists and human rights defenders endure relentless harassment, including fabricated charges, judicial summons, and physical threats. Organizations encounter bureaucratic obstacles, such as rejection of registration applications and interference in daily operations. In some cases, approvals for events require detailed participant information, breaching privacy and exposing individuals to security risks.

The Coalition and other human rights groups call for urgent international intervention. They stress the need for independent mechanisms to monitor violations and ensure accountability. These groups also demand the protection of activists and journalists to restore a safer, freer civil space in Yemen.

This alarming situation highlights the broader human rights crisis exacerbated by Yemen’s ongoing conflict, underscoring the urgent need for collective local and international efforts to address these challenges.
