A community committee of 10 active social figures has been formed to lead reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring the social fabric in Taiz. Their activities will also extend to Marib. The ten members come from four districts in Taiz: Al-Shamayateen, Maqbana, Al-Ma’afer, and Al-Mudhaffar.
This activity comes as part of the SPARK project, supported by DT Institute and implemented by SAM for rights & Liberties and Abductee’s of Mother Association.
The committee has conducted several field visits to meet with local stakeholders in the targeted governorates, including local authorities, victims, and community leaders. They have also facilitated dialogue sessions to build trust and foster understanding among divided communities. Through these efforts, they have documented over 20 issues that threaten social stability and increase tensions between local populations.
The members are working diligently to prioritize the most urgent concerns, with ongoing monitoring in targeted areas to identify serious violations that require reconciliation. Since the committee began its work, two community disputes have already been successfully resolved. The first took place in Al-Mudhaffar district, where the committee helped mediate a case involving violations committed by law enforcement authorities—a matter that had previously caused unrest and remained unresolved. The second was in Mashra’a & Hadnan district, where a dispute over the implementation of a local water project had sparked community tensions. Through mediation and dialogue, the committee managed to bring the conflicting parties to an agreement that restored cooperation and calmed the situation.
Their efforts are commendable and will continue for ten months, during which they will lead a series of reconciliation initiatives. These efforts will be accompanied by awareness campaigns on transitional justice, contributing to the broader goal of promoting peace, accountability, and social cohesion in Taiz, Marib, and beyond.
