DT Institute, in partnership with the Justice4Yemen Pact coalition, recently convened a series of high-level stakeholder meetings in Geneva to confront the multifaceted human rights crisis in Yemen. These critical discussions brought together international policymakers, civil society leaders, and regional stakeholders to address key challenges, including widespread impunity, the erosion of civic freedoms, and the urgent need for a victims-centered approach to transitional justice. Among the actionable recommendations presented were strengthening protection mechanisms for human rights defenders and journalists, particularly by addressing systemic barriers such as visa restrictions and ensuring their safety amidst increasing threats. The coalition also called for the promotion of independent investigations into widespread human rights violations to hold perpetrators accountable and restore trust in justice processes. Recognizing the limitations of international bodies like OHCHR due to restricted access, the participants emphasized the need to enhance local monitoring networks, empowering grassroots organizations to document and report abuses effectively.
In addition, the coalition advocated for mobilizing influential regional actors, with a special focus on Oman, to actively support initiatives promoting accountability and transitional justice in Yemen. At the international level, participants urged the Human Rights Council to adopt a holistic and multifaceted approach to Yemen’s crisis, integrating diplomatic, legal, and humanitarian strategies to ensure meaningful progress. These discussions highlighted the importance of a comprehensive and inclusive approach that prioritizes the needs of victims and amplifies their voices in the pursuit of justice. Through these engagements, DT Institute and the Justice4Yemen Pact coalition reaffirmed their commitment to addressing Yemen’s complex and evolving human rights landscape, demonstrating a shared resolve to advance accountability, safeguard human rights, and deliver justice for Yemeni victims who have endured unimaginable hardship.
