Mines in Yemen: The “Buried Catastrophe” (Blog from Justice4Yemen coalition member, Musaala organization for Human rights)

Yemen’s landmine crisis continues to wreak havoc, with severe impacts on human lives and the socio-economic fabric of the country. The tragic cases of Ali Al-Jumaai and Abdel Fattah Al- Qefili highlight the devastating personal toll, with injuries leading to lifelong disabilities. A study by Save the Children in March 2023 reveals an alarming increase in child casualties from landmines, rising from one every five days in 2018 to one every two days in 2022, with over half of the 657 casualties in 2022 being children. Human Rights Watch reports that the Houthis’ use of mines in critical areas has exacerbated food insecurity and economic instability. Yemen had nearly eradicated landmines by 2007, but the resurgence began with the conflict in 2011 and intensified in 2014, with a significant increase in casualties even post-UN truce in 2022. To address this crisis, intensified demining operations, comprehensive victim support, widespread awareness campaigns, and strengthened political commitments are essential. International and local actors must prioritize coordinated efforts to ensure a safer future for all Yemenis.
